Professional Drain-Cleaning: Power Rodding Versus Hydro-Jetting
Power Rodding "Plumbing Snake"
Power rodding uses a flexible cable, usually made of steel, which is inserted
into plumbing pipes and drains. The flexible cable can be pushed through joints
and around bends in the pipes. The cable has a head that is fitted with
extremely sharp teeth. This device is inserted into the pipe until it reaches
the location of the obstruction.
When the device’s electric motor is turned on, the teeth are rotated at high speed. This drills through the obstruction, and also removes things like tree roots and sludge, removing build-up which may have developed over years. The cutting tool totally shreds the material causing the obstruction. The material is then flushed away down the pipe when water is flushed into it.

Power rodding was the precursor to hydro-jetting. Before power
rodding, it was often necessary to physically open the pipe at the point of the
location, removing the obstruction by hand.
Enter the Hydro-Jet Machine: Hydro Jetting Process
The Hydro-jet uses a high-pressure line at the end of which is a nozzle that has several jets of water. The hydro-jet is capable of generating a high pressure jet of water up to 5,000 psi. This powerful jet of water literally blasts away even the most stubborn obstruction. It is also great for cutting away and removing tree roots, and it also scours the pipe walls, clearing away accumulated sludge and grease build-up. Unlike the rodding tools, which can sometimes only bore a small hole through the obstruction without totally removing it, the hydro-jet machine totally eliminates the obstruction and washes it away down the line and off your property. Even with its powerful jet of water, the hydro-jet machine is more gentle on your pipes than rodding machines with their steel cables and rotating steel teeth, which can cause damage to your pipes. We use the hydro-jet machines to clean drains from 1-inch drains in the home all the way to the largest sewer lines in Los Angeles.

video demonstrating power of Hydro Jetting
Before we insert the hydro-jet machine into a line, we first
inset a video camera and camera the line. This tells us two things: it shows us
exactly what the obstruction looks like, and it also tells us exactly where the
obstruction is located. If the obstruction is located further into the line
than 100 feet, a cabling/rodding device will usually be ineffective, and you
will have to use a hydro-jet machine to clear it. After the obstruction has
been removed by the hydro-jet’s blast of water, we again camera the line, to
make sure the obstruction has been removed. We also flush all toilets and run
all faucets in the home, to make sure we have done our job. Sometimes, one or
more passes of the hydro-jet machine are necessary to completely remove the
obstruction and restore normal flow.
